The Light of Darkness

Excerpt from The Light of Darkness My first big challenge at Poughkeepsie High School was the misconceptions and misinformation about Africa. The first question I was asked by a student at the school was about which airport I flew in from. “How was the flight from Johannesburg?” Despite the ignorance of the student’s question, I was equally ignorant. “Where is that?" “What do you mean?" I asked. “I mean Johannesburg.” he responded. After looking at him confused for the second time, he asked, “Isn’t Johannesburg the only airport in Africa?" Oh, I finally got it. Johannesburg is actually a city somewhere in Africa. “No, I came from Banjul International Airport.” Now, he looked really confused. He said, "What the f**k is this n****r talking about?" I was so excited to hear those words because I’d heard words like this in American movies before. So, now it felt like I was living in America.
